Description
Toor dal, also called arhar, is a staple pulse with a mild, nutty flavour. It cooks down to a soft, creamy consistency, which makes it the base for everyday dal, sambar and khichdi. It naturally provides plant protein and dietary fibre.
Why Dang is different. Dang is a forested, mostly tribal district in southeastern Gujarat. In November 2021 the state declared it a natural farming district, where farmers are encouraged to use natural inputs such as Jeevamrit in place of chemical fertilisers and pesticides. Why is farming in Dang, Gujarat different?
Dang is a forested, mostly tribal district in southeastern Gujarat where farming has traditionally been low input. In November 2021 the Gujarat government declared it a natural farming district. Farmers there are encouraged to replace chemical fertilisers and pesticides with natural inputs such as Jeevamrit and Ghan Jeevamrit, and the state supports them with annual assistance per hectare. We buy our rice, toor dal, black chana and whole green moong directly from farming families in Dang, a region where natural farming is actively promoted by the state.
